Psalm 107:1-3
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say this—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
those he gathered from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.
his love endures forever.
Let the redeemed of the Lord say this—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
those he gathered from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.
Many of the psalms include admonitions for
us to be thankful for God's redemption. This one has that encouragement at the
very beginning. It also indicates that our redemption needs to echo through the
lives of God's people, by giving thanks for God's goodness, and for his
constant love.
Later verses in this psalm continue the
reference of God's people who have experienced a rescue at the hands of their
Heavenly Father. While the entire psalm
is about deliverance, we are given a unique picture of all that God goes
through to bring sinful man back to him. Here are some examples from Psalm 107:
v. 4
Some
wandered in the desert wastelands.
These are people who seem to never find their way to a place of security
and peace. Much like multitudes in our world who are hungry for something
better than what they currently experience, yet their way toward God seems so
elusive.
v.
10 Some sat in darkness and the deepest
gloom. That aptly describes many of the people we see daily. Blinded by
the cares and "things" of this world, they had rather complain about
the darkness than open their eyes to God's light.
v.
17 Some became fools through their
rebellious ways. When will we
ever learn? Rebellion always leads to
heartache and despair. God knows our troubles will usually lead us back to him.
Over and over the examples are given of the
ways God wanted to rescue his people, yet they had what they considered better
ideas. Those were ideas that would
eventually lead to calamity. But in each case, God continued to seek them in
their distress and pain.
Your lesson today is quite simple. No
matter where you stray or what you may be involved in, God still loves you and
longs to bring you back to himself. He leads, guides, instructs, and always
shows us the way we should go. It's all
based on the love he has for you, no matter where you are. His love reaches to you from the cross of His
Son, who paid the price for the sins of mankind.
