We are amazed when the news on TV tells us of a brave
neighbor rushing into a burning house to rescue a child, or when a complete
stranger jumps from a dock into a lake to save a man who is drowning. In recent
years stories of bravery have been reported, like the injured soldier who
returned to bring a fallen comrade to safety.
Stories like these have a way of making us wonder how we would respond
to such circumstances. Today's scripture
is one of rescue; the rescue of us. Even when we get to thinking we can make it
alone with no help needed, the story is still about a rescue.
Colossians 1:13-14
13 For he has rescued
us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he
loves, 14 in whom we have redemption the forgiveness of sins.
Have you experienced dark moments in your life? Colossian
Christians, just like you and me, can have the assurance that God rescues us
from darkness and into the kingdom of his Son.
This is the time for us to examine our own lives to determine where we
are...in darkness, or the kingdom of Christ.
A Christian once told me her life was just like living in
quicksand, and every day she sank a little deeper. She needed rescue and I pointed
her to Psalm 40:2, "He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he
set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand." God wishes to rescue you from whatever it is
that separates you from Him. He will
provide for your life, "a firm place to stand."
I am going to give you a profound truth. It's not just a
pretty phrase we use when someone is having a "downer" day. It is a truth you can lean on. Here it comes......God loves you. He is just and right in all things and our sin prevents
us from being in relationship with him. But he still loves us. That's why we
desperately need the rescue he provides. Consider the gift of God's love for
you; his Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Relate this
truth to wherever you may be in your spiritual journey.
God longs to rescue you from the dominion of darkness. He longs to bring you into the kingdom of the Son he loves. It is in Him we find redemption, the forgiveness of our sins.
