This first verse of Psalm 147
calls for a weekend of thought and meditation.
Not many will disagree with the wording, it's always a good time to sing
praises to our God. The songs of praise
may sound better coming from some people than others, but that's only measuring
the quality by earthly standards.
I don't care if you have one of
the worst mono-tone voices, even your praise of the Lord can and should be
demonstrated through singing to him. The
Psalmist says in the second part of that verse, "how pleasant and fitting to
praise him." That's true if
we are a good singer or not.
But what shall we sing? Can it be a song we have known for years
through our repeated singing at our worship services? Should it be the singing of some favorite
scripture verses? What if we make up our
own arrangement of words which center around a Bible theme. is that okay? The answer in each instance is yes....and
don't forget, it's pleasant and fitting to praise God. Nobody has to hear you singing, but God will
hear and know it's coming from your heart.
If you are still at a loss about
the how and what to sing in praising God, you only need to read a few more
verses of Psalm 147. Starting in verse
2,
"2 The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel. 3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. 4 He determines the number of the stars and calls them
each by name. 5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his
understanding has no limit. 6 The LORD sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground."
Perhaps one
of the most read verses in the Psalms is verse 3. "He heals the brokenhearted and binds
up their wounds." If your
heart is broken or if you need God's help in binding the wounds of your body,
soul or spirit, there is reason to sing to him in praise.
So, this
weekend, while you are working in the yard, driving down the road, or just
alone for a few moments, allow your inner being to reflect your honor and
praise toward God through you singing voice.
It's also a wonderful way for you to express your thanks for all God has
done and continues to do for you.
