Keep the Faith

We've written about the Apostle Paul on numerous occasions because we can learn so much from his letters to churches and individuals.  Paul, who counted himself as the chief of sinners, is probably known to us as the chief of saints.   He worked throughout his ministry in establishing churches, converting folks to the gospel of Christ, and his overall commitment to sharing the good news.

Paul, when writing to the young church worker, Timothy, made statements to prepare Timothy for his work in the ministry, while also giving advice and counseling to maintain his own life in the truth of the gospel . Here are a few of Paul's instruction to Timothy, all taken from the second of his letters to the young preacher.

"Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus."  2 Timothy 1:13

"And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others."  2 Timothy 2:2

"But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it."  2 Timothy 3:14

"In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction."  2 Timothy 4:1-2

Yes, these words were written to young Timothy who was going to be responsible for teaching bible truth, and expanding the growth of the church through the conversion of people to Jesus.  But more than that, these verses also outline our own charge to remain faithful while living our lives as examples for others to see Jesus living in us.

We could all use the admonitions of Paul for Timothy, to strengthen our own lives and help others as they grow in the Lord.  These are words which give evidence of the gospel message and the importance of living it in our daily experience.

Paul's message to Timothy and to us is quite simple and can be shortened into the key phrase which we use occasionally, "Keep the Faith."   With that in mind, let's try something to help each other.  Instead of telling your friends goodbye when they depart, tell them to "keep the faith."  Saying it will keep you aware of your own need to stay faithful, and will become a growth point for your friends as they hear it over and over again.  God bless.
